Genesis says we were made in God's image. Now we have made something in ours. The title does double theological work and so does this book.
In Our Image is a theological reckoning with artificial intelligence, not a dismissal of technology, and not an uncritical celebration of it, but an honest, rigorous engagement with what AI means for our understanding of the human person, for justice and power, for creativity and wisdom, for the relationship between the created and the creator.
What does Jesus say when the machine writes poetry? When the algorithm reproduces historical racism at machine speed? When Silicon Valley promises digital immortality? When the surveillance state gives human institutions access to a kind of omniscience that was, until very recently, available only to God? When the tower of Babel is built not from bricks but from computer?
Drawing on Tolkien's theology of sub-creation, the Ubuntu concept of personhood, the prophecy of Amos on the dishonest scale, and the Christian doctrine of the resurrection, and asking what wisdom means when information is infinite. In Our Image is a theological companion for the most consequential technological moment in human history.
