Why is it so hard for analysts to reveal their participation in their treatments? In clinical accounts the analyst has often come across as proper-functioning but stilted and lifeless, just not there. Early on, Freud had responded to the self-indulgent actions of some of his colleagues by laying out clear rules for professional analytic behaviour. The authors capture a sense of what it is like to be inside each analyst's mind as he or she works with a patient. They explore the analyst's feelings and sensibilities during sessions, the nature of the analyst's struggles in the moment. The readers will get a sense of what it would be like to be in treatment with this person, and, by extension, with a therapist or analyst they might consult. The authors follow the arc of the analysts' careers, how they find themselves changing their ideas and sensibilities, how they've evolved, how they reckon with themselves as they work.
