In the coal town of Whiskey Run, the company owns nearly everything-houses, wages, even time itself. Childhood ends early, especially if the wage earner of the family dies in a mining accident.
Fourteen-year-old Sadie Nicklin is charged with caring for the Landon's' infant son, a task that binds her to the mine manager's family who live in the big house above the mining village.
