Some relationships don't break. They quietly stop making room for one of you.
From the outside, everything holds. The bills are paid, the children are fine, the house runs. Nobody would look at your life and think anything is wrong. Most days you'd agree with them.
But somewhere along the way you stopped saying what you thought. You started deciding it wasn't worth the conversation. You let a few friendships go quiet because it was easier. And when someone asks what you want, you find you have to think about it.
I'm Christina Ng. I spent more than ten years in a marriage that was never dramatic and never cruel, and I still ended up unrecognisable to myself. My husband was more educated than me. That was a fact, not a fault. But I turned it into a reason my voice mattered less, and I did that quietly, over years, without anyone asking me to.
That's what I want to write about. Not blame. Not who was right. What happens to a person when she slowly removes herself from her own life, and what it takes to come back.
A relationship where one person disappears isn't good for either of them.
We talk about staying as though it's always the loving choice. Sometimes it is. But a marriage held together by one person going silent isn't peace, and it isn't kind to the person who never knew that's what was holding it up.
Honesty serves a relationship. So does knowing your own mind. If a relationship can survive both, it becomes stronger. If it can't, that's worth finding out.
What's inside:
This book will not tell you to leave.
I can't see your life. Two people in similar circumstances may need entirely different things, and I've watched enough of both to know I'm not qualified to decide for anyone. What I can offer is the questions I wish someone had handed me, and the practical steps that follow whichever way you go.
You may finish this book and stay, with more honesty than you had before. That is a real and good outcome.
Written for anyone - woman or man - who is holding a life together from the inside and is more tired than they let on.
You are allowed to be fully present in your own life. Everyone around you benefits when you are.
This book describes personal experience. It is not medical, psychological, legal or financial advice.
