We Read to Become... is a simple teachers' guide for building a culture of reading with its epicenter being the proactive mandate of principals emanating out to middle managers, teachers, students, parents, and stakeholders creating a mindset that places reading and writing at the core of a school improvement plan.
This paradigm flips the proclivity that teaching reading is the task of reading or literacy teachers. So, every member of staff sees themselves as a teacher of reading. Why? Because we read to become. We read to become teachers, doctors, fishermen, lawyers, farmers, preachers, politicians, musicians, actors, etc.
'We read to become' resets the notion that reading starts at the kindergarten, infant, or basic school level. It enables teachers to reach each student where they're at because it's never too late to start a literacy intervention.
