It is well established that preemergence herbicideactivity is influenced by soil type, and recommendedrates for most soil-applied herbicides are adjustedto soil type. Current technology allows applicationrates to be adjusted on the go (VRA), adjusting therate as soil type changes in a field. Mostapplicators offering this service base herbiciderates on soil organic matter content. However,several other factors influence herbicide activity,most importantly weed density and environment. Thisresearch is to determine which of these factors ismost important in determining the optimum herbiciderate, and the economic benefit of VRA to the grower.The objective of this study is to determine therelative contribution of soil type, weed density andenvironmental factors on herbicide effectiveness.
