Over a period of a decade-and-a-half during the 21st century, the majority African American population of Detroit has been subjected to one of the most intense institutional efforts aimed at political disempowerment and economic exploitation in the United States. This book was written as the events in the city since 2009 were unfolding. The author takes a participant-observer posture in evaluating the nature and dimensions of the social crises in Detroit and its implications nationally and globally. Not only does the writer provide intimate details of this unprecedented historical period there are sweeping programmatic solutions advanced which challenge the underlying causes of the so-called urban crisis. Official characterization of the actual nationally oppressive conditions of African Americans has shifted dramatically since the period of the 1960s through the 1980s. The explaining away of the burgeoning struggle of more than 40 million inhabitants of the U.S. is creating an even more volatile situation for the world's leading capitalist state. Until these contradictions are resolved there can be no social equilibrium in the U.S. and consequently in other geopolitical regions of the world.
