Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), are explored as they relate to the family system and the development of trauma. Relevant research has been collected on the topic and is provided within this writing, with emphasis on how these personality types tend to be attracted to each other, and how they impact their offspring.

The writing concludes with various strategies for healing and moving forward in a healthy way after NPD and BPD related traumas occur, based on personal and professional experience. The topic discussed is severely under-studied despite the many individuals who are affected by such trauma every day, thus making this writing important for the field of mental health and psychology. This writing is particularly significant for people to be able to recognize possible neglect or abuse within their own household. Complex trauma of this nature often seems subtle and can go unidentified by most family and friends, as the dynamics unfold insidiously, leaving the offspring to suffer in silence.
