The optimists say AI will create more jobs than it destroys. The pessimists say this time is different. Neither camp offers much that a person sitting at their desk on a Tuesday morning can actually use.

This Has Happened Before takes a different approach. It tells nineteen true stories of skilled people whose work was made cheaper by a new technology, from a water carrier on a Nile estate in 2000 BCE to a travel agent watching Expedia appear on her clients' screens in 1996. Each story examines what actually happened: who survived, who didn't, what choices they made, and what those choices cost.

The patterns are uncomfortable. The displacement is always slower than the headlines suggest and faster than the workers hope. The people who come through are not the smartest or the most qualified. They are the ones who act before they have complete information. And the honest cost of adapting is that you become a different professional than the one you planned to be.

This is not a book about AI. It is a book about what happens to skilled people when the thing they are skilled at becomes cheaper to do.
