Ill-conceived, ill-timed and arguably illogical, Scottish football's first attempt at adding a third tier to its already creaking professional structure couldn't have come at a worse time and ultimately ended in disaster. The new Division III was too geographically spread out, charged too high entry prices and consequently attracted too few fans to too many games of questionable quality. The Scottish football authorities may have suffered considerable embarrassment over the eventual failure of this venture, but the real victims, however, were the clubs themselves. Having been plucked hopefully out of Senior football, many of them then had nowhere to go when it all went horribly wrong.
For the first time, a full historical and statistical record is presented of a forgotten episode in League football where, more often than not, the prevailing playing conditions were atrocious and the supporters unapologetically unruly.
