The Corruption has taken Algaera. Many of its once-powerful nations lay in ruins, their people enslaved or part of the Corruption's roaming hordes.
Pa'ted and Tavia are ripped apart after the assassination of the Mamoyan Emperor. Tavia wavers against the urge to unite Algaera by any means necessary, and Pa'ted no longer recognizes the woman he once loved.
Fione is estranged from the Honors after losing her bid for leadership and throws herself headlong into the battle against the Corruption. When she has the chance to prove herself worthy on an eleventh-hour mission, she sees no alternative but to accept.
Alfen, no longer the same boy who first left Firandal, grapples with the vestiges of the Corruption gnawing away at his body. As the world collapses around him, he begins to succumb to the rage building within.
