The Worshipful Company of Grocers

"The Worshipful Company of Grocers, an Historical Retrospect, 1345-1923" is a comprehensive historical account of one of the City of London's most prestigious and ancient livery companies. Authored by Joseph Aubrey Rees, this work traces the evolution of the Grocers' Company from its fourteenth-century foundations as the Fraternity of St. Anthony through nearly six hundred years of civic and commercial influence. The narrative explores the guild's pivotal role in regulating the spice and grocery trades, its contributions to the governance of London, and its enduring involvement in charitable and educational endeavors.

The book details the internal organization of the company, its relationship with the English Crown, and its resilience through periods of political and economic upheaval. By examining archival records and historical milestones, the work provides valuable insights into the social and economic fabric of London, illustrating how the guild system shaped the development of modern commerce. This retrospective serves as an essential resource for scholars of British history, economic historians, and those interested in the long-standing traditions of the City of London's livery companies.
