Edward I of England intended to break Scotland-and Robert the Bruce with it.

He stripped the country of its sovereignty, carried away the Stone of Destiny, hunted those who resisted him, and answered rebellion with imprisonment, torture, and death. When Bruce finally rose against him, Edward declared him an outlaw, stripped him of his titles, and ordered that he and his followers be hunted without mercy.
Bruce had almost everything taken from him.

His army was shattered. His family was captured. Those closest to him suffered because they bore his name or supported his cause. He was driven into exile, condemned by the Church, betrayed by men he had trusted, and pursued across Scotland by one of the most powerful kings in Europe.

He was supposed to surrender.

He did not.

From defeat and exile, Robert Bruce returned to wage a relentless campaign for Scotland's freedom. With men such as James Douglas and Thomas Randolph beside him, he transformed scattered resistance into an army and a divided country into a nation. Victory at Loudoun Hill was followed by the destruction of English strongholds and, ultimately, the confrontation that would decide Scotland's fate: Bannockburn.

But military victory was only part of the struggle. Bruce still had to win recognition of Scotland as an independent kingdom, survive betrayal from within, confront the enormous human cost of war, and force England and the wider world to accept what Edward had tried so brutally to deny-that Scotland would choose its own king and determine its own destiny.
