In a prison where the nights hum like machinery and the air tastes of metal and old soap, a tiny witness keeps its own counsel. From the shadows beneath a radiator, a nameless narrator measures a world of giants by sound and smell-the rattle of meal carts, the thunder of boots, the ritual silences when fear becomes a kind of weather. It learns the block as an ecosystem-keepers, scrappers, the Kind One who whispers comfort through the bars, and the barely-glimpsed Predator whose presence tightens the corridors.
When a new arrival's screams fracture the delicate order, the prison's rhythm turns rough. The narrator hoards crumbs, trades offerings to the Kind One like currency, and survives two razor-close brushes with the Predator, reading meaning in footsteps and door-clicks the way others read prayer. Whispers of escape infect the block. The narrator can't parse the words, only the surge in voices, the way breath shortens when hope does math.
Then the building convulses: alarms, sirens, boots, a storm of keys. A riot-flooded halls, broken lights, mop water turned to tide. Between human violence and its own small terror, the narrator crawls, squeezes, listens, and endures. The Kind One runs for the night, bleeding. The Predator hunts in the blackout. Somewhere between a collapsing vent and a drainage pipe, the narrator's language hardens from metaphors and hymns into the plain grammar of survival-whiskers reading air, claws scraping iron, tail dragging through grit-until everything we thought we understood about this witness tilts. The truth isn't a twist; it's a recalibration of scale.
