In 1934 a woman boarded a liner at Southampton. She never got off. The manifest says she landed.
Southampton, today. Genealogist Hallie Verdin is hired to answer one simple question: who was her client's grandmother before she came to America? The answer takes two days. A berth number on an old passenger list, and a name that was never hers.
Then Hallie finds the same berth on three crossings, three years running. Three different names. Three signatures written in the same left-handed hand.
1934. Assistant purser Nan Cardew keeps the Second Class list of the RMS Ortolan, and on every crossing there is one passenger who does not exist. Berth 212 is always sold, always boarded, always landed. The woman in it is never the same woman twice.
On the sixth night of a nine-day crossing, someone aboard works out what the berth is for.
Ninety years later, sealed inside the bow of a scrapped liner, the answer is still there. And the only person who could have given the dead woman her name refused it, at a rail, in the dark, out of kindness.
The Third Crossing is a dual-timeline mystery about the lies people tell to save strangers, and what they cost the one stranger they could not save.
