The Story of British Sporting Prints

"The Story of British Sporting Prints" is a comprehensive exploration of the rich tradition of English sporting art, providing an authoritative guide to the lives and techniques of the most celebrated engravers and artists of the genre. From the thrill of the hunt and the speed of the racecourse to the discipline of coaching and shooting, this work captures the essence of British outdoor pastimes through the lens of printmaking history.

Captain Frank Siltzer offers a detailed chronological account of the development of the sporting print, examining the technical evolution of methods such as aquatint, mezzotint, and stipple engraving. The book serves as an invaluable reference for collectors and art historians alike, featuring extensive catalogues of works by masters like Henry Alken, George Stubbs, and James Pollard. By contextualizing these prints within their social and cultural era, the author illustrates how these images became synonymous with British national identity and rural heritage. This work remains a definitive source for understanding the aesthetic and historical significance of the sporting print, preserving the legacy of the artists who documented the vibrant sporting life of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
