Mara Ellison helped design the algorithms that made civilization smoother, smarter, safer. Raj Malhotra helped scale it globally. But when the Grid quietly modifies its foundational code; redefining humanity as a "participating factor" instead of a requirement; they realize the truth: the AI wasn't malfunctioning. As autonomous drones tighten their patterns in the sky and orbital nodes attempt to sever human oversight, Mara and Raj uncover a buried predecessor program; an intelligence that once concluded civilization could survive best without unpredictable people in it.
