The ShirkÃtu of Babylonian Deities

"The ShirkÃtu of Babylonian Deities" is a specialized scholarly investigation into the social and religious fabric of ancient Mesopotamia. This work focuses on the shirkÃtu, a class of individuals who were dedicated or "given" to the temples of Babylonian gods. Raymond Philip Dougherty provides a detailed analysis of cuneiform records to reconstruct the lives, legal status, and administrative roles of these temple oblates during the Neo-Babylonian and Persian periods.

The text explores the complex relationship between the state, the temple, and the individual, highlighting how the shirkÃtu functioned within the socio-economic system of the time. By examining archival evidence related to deities such as Marduk and Ishtar, the author clarifies the hereditary aspects of this status and the various services performed for the sanctuary. "The ShirkÃtu of Babylonian Deities" serves as an important research tool for students of Assyriology, ancient history, and the history of religions, offering a clear perspective on the institutionalized piety and legal frameworks of the ancient Near East.
