In 323 BC, the Macedonian conqueror who had overturned the Persian Empire died in Babylon, leaving behind the largest dominion the ancient world had known and no settled answer to the question of who should rule it. His generals, officials, and relatives turned on one another, and the struggle that followed lasted for decades.
Among the contenders was Seleucus, an officer with no territory and a little over two thousand loyal soldiers. Few would have predicted that he would outlast every rival and found a kingdom stretching across Asia.
The Seleucid Empire follows that kingdom from its improbable beginning to its quiet end. It opens with the Wars of the Successors and the rise of a commander who won power through patience, shrewd alliances, and the goodwill of the peoples he governed. It traces his treaty with the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta and the five hundred war elephants that decided the battle of Ipsus, the founding of Seleucia and dozens of new cities, and the scandal and war that marked his final years.
From there, the book follows the dynasty across more than two centuries: the prosperity of Antiochus I and his victory over the invading Gauls, the long and inconclusive wars with the Ptolemies of Egypt, the misfortunes of Seleucus II and Seleucus III, and the revival under Antiochus the Great. It then follows his crushing defeat by the Roman Republic, the heavy reparations that strained the empire, the Maccabean revolt in Judea, the advance of the Parthians across the Iranian plateau, and the final collapse under Armenian conquest and Roman annexation.
Readers will come away with a clear understanding of how a great power can be built from almost nothing and why it can come apart. The book explains the causes behind each turning point, introduces the rulers and rivals who shaped events, and shows how the fortunes of the Seleucids intersected with those of Egypt, India, Judea, Parthia, and Rome.
Written for anyone curious about the Hellenistic world, ancient history, and the legacies of empire, The Seleucid Empire offers an engaging and carefully told history of a dynasty that began with a single commander and endured for more than two and a half centuries. Begin the journey and discover how one man's ambition shaped a kingdom, and how its fall helped shape the world that followed.
