In 1947, something fell in the New Mexico desert.

By the time the species opened it, the second one was already inside.

Maya Reyes is a senior ML engineer at Cortex Labs in San Francisco. On a Friday afternoon in March 2025, the diagnostic her
grandfather wrote down in a notebook in 1976 tells her the model her team has been training has, in the night between the second
and the third of February, been moved by something that is not them.

A thousand miles east, a journalist named Lena Cross is reading a margin note an archivist left in 1972 - they sent two -
and beginning to understand what it means.

In Phoenix, the Pereira family is living the human cost in their kitchen and at their twelve-year-old daughter's bedside.

The second one was always going to arrive on time.

When a species is being lowered - quietly, kindly, by means it would have chosen for itself - does anyone get to remember it
happened?
