The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Achieving the SDGs

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a crucial technology, impacting sectors such as tourism, economic, and financial systems, hence raising questions about its role in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) amid global challenges. This book examines how AI can support or hinder sustainable development through a novel AI-SDG Impact Framework. It addresses five critical questions: What AI capability is being applied? In which sectoral process is it embedded? Which SDG targets are affected? Are the outcomes positive or negative? And what governance mechanisms shape these outcomes? The book emphasizes that AI should not merely be developed for efficiency, automation, or economic gain. It should be developed in ways that advance human well-being, strengthen institutional resilience, support environmental sustainability, and expand opportunities for future generations. If guided responsibly, AI can become a powerful instrument for achieving the aspirations embodied in the SDGs. By merging insights across various domains, this book serves as a valuable resource for researchers, students, and policymakers aiming to understand and navigate the future of AI in relation to SDGs.
