Two brothers - close but with real tension between them - find a cave on their property (or near where they live) that turns out to be a rift into a parallel version of their world. On the other side, one brother meets his adult self, hardened and marked by something that happened over there. The other brother learns his other-self hasn't been born yet - meaning in that dimension, he doesn't exist yet, and his presence there is somehow destabilizing something. The dark, eerie tone comes from the wrongness of the place - time doesn't work right, the adult self isn't entirely trustworthy, and the boys start to realize going back home might not be simple.
