The Price of Obedience

"The Price of Obedience" is a gripping and emotionally resonant novel that delves into the profound and lasting impact of war, the elusive pursuit of justice, and the unwavering strength of the human spirit. John Sandham, a seasoned traveler with a global perspective, draws on his own experiences in Central America to craft a fictional narrative that feels deeply authentic.

The story opens with a harrowing scene in 1982 Guatemala, where schoolteacher Sisasi is desperately trying to lead ten young pupils to safety through a hostile jungle, hunted by Lieutenant Carlos Cruz and his ruthless platoon. This brutal attack on unarmed civilians, including children, sets the stage for a decades-long quest for accountability. Sisasi herself is severely injured in a grenade explosion, narrowly escaping with her life thanks to the intervention of British airman Daniel Sinclaire.

Twelve years later, Sisasi is a dedicated teacher living in Mexico, is still haunted by nightmares and bearing the physical scars of the past. Driven by an unyielding need for justice, Sisasi embarks on a relentless investigation, meticulously gathering evidence against Carlos Cruz. To her shock and fury, she discovers that Cruz, the orchestrator of unspeakable atrocities, is now living a life of luxury and respectability in California. Meanwhile, Danny finds himself drawn back to the Frente al Mar Hotel seeking closure. A chance encounter with Rodrigues, the hotel owner, shatters his long-held beliefs, revealing astonishing truths that he was completely unaware of.

The heart of the narrative transitions into a powerful courtroom drama. With the help of a shrewd military lawyer, Ruth Lockwood, and compelling testimonies from survivors like Polo (who was grievously wounded in the border attack) and Father Michael (who witnessed the horrors in Colina), An undeniable case is built against Cruz. The trial aims to expose Cruz's ruthless nature, his tactics, and his cold disregard for human life. His defence showcase him as a heroic soldier, not a war criminal. The defense discredit the witnesses and justify Cruz's actions under the "fog of war".

"The Price of Obedience" is more than just a legal thriller; it's a testament to the enduring human spirit and the unwavering pursuit of truth against overwhelming odds. It forces readers to confront uncomfortable questions about morality in conflict, the definition of heroism, and the profound cost of violence, even years after the battles have ceased.
