The Play of Oliver Goldsmith

"The Play of Oliver Goldsmith" presents the quintessential dramatic works of one of the 18th century's most influential literary voices. A master of the comedy of manners, Goldsmith is celebrated for his ability to weave humor, satire, and social commentary into engaging theatrical narratives. This collection highlights his role in revitalizing the English stage, moving away from the overly sentimental plays of his era toward a more robust and laughing comedy.

The volume features his most enduring contribution to the theatre, "She Stoops to Conquer", a brilliant exploration of class, vanity, and romantic misunderstanding. Through the misadventures of characters like Marlow and Tony Lumpkin, Goldsmith provides a sharp yet affectionate critique of Georgian society. Also included are works like "The Good-Natur'd Man", demonstrating his skill in character development and his unique perspective on human folly.

Rich in wit and historical significance, these plays offer a vivid window into the cultural life of the late 1700s. Whether for the student of classic literature or the lover of traditional drama, this collection remains a testament to Goldsmith's lasting impact on the world of letters and his genius for comedic storytelling.
