Before history gave them a name, they had to decide what they would defend.
In the highlands of central Mexico, long after the great city of Teotihuacan has fallen silent, Ikan's people live beside a guarded spring beneath a black ridge. They know the land by its hidden water, thorn paths, seed stores, graves, and dangerous roads. They do not call themselves Otomi.
Then strangers arrive from the east.
Teya and the Four Reed Houses speak a different tongue and carry the weariness of a people driven from failing wells. They ask for water. Ikan's community offers one measured bowl-and learns that thirst can bring more than hunger to a valley.
When seed is stolen and two children vanish, suspicion threatens to turn the newcomers into enemies. Ikan, Teya, and a small party follow the abductors across reed marshes, flooded ravines, and the broken old road to the Great Stone Place: the vast, haunted ruins of Teotihuacan.
There they discover a raider leader's plan: divide the people of the spring, draw their defenders away, and seize the ridge before fear can turn it into a refuge.
To survive, Ikan must return with more than the missing children. Nai, keeper of seed and measure, must transform an old thorn shelter into a stronghold. Teya must choose whether her people will remain strangers outside the gate-or help build a future within it. And all must confront the word carried by outsiders: Otomitl.
To some, it means hill people. To others, fierce fighters. To those who live beneath the ridge, it is a name spoken by other mouths.
The Name from the Road is an epic historical adventure of ancient Mexico-of ruined cities, contested water, perilous journeys, divided languages, and the hard work of building a place that can hold.
For readers of immersive historical fiction, ancient civilizations, Indigenous Americas history, archaeological adventure, and stories of survival, kinship, and courage.
