"The Mystery of a Hansom Cab" by Fergus Hume is a captivating detective novel set in Melbourne, Australia. The story begins with the discovery of a man's body in a hansom cab, leading to a complex investigation. The victim, identified as Oliver Whyte, is found with a handkerchief soaked in chloroform over his mouth, suggesting murder. Detective Gorby is assigned to solve the case, and he begins by examining Whyte's personal effects and questioning his landlady, Mrs. Hableton. Through her, Gorby learns about Whyte's mysterious visitor, a man in a light coat who had threatened Whyte during a heated argument. This man becomes the prime suspect, as he was last seen with Whyte before his death. Gorby also discovers that Whyte was involved with a wealthy heiress, adding a potential motive for the murder. As the investigation unfolds, Gorby delves into Whyte's social circle, including his close friend Moreland, who might hold key information. The narrative intricately weaves together themes of love, jealousy, and revenge, as Gorby navigates through a web of deceit to uncover the truth. Hume's novel is notable for its vivid depiction of 19th-century Melbourne and its pioneering role in the detective fiction genre.
