"It's just 290 a month." Before you say yes to a payment, a lease or a job offer, ask five questions: Purpose, Cost, Risk, Exit, Fit. The Money Choice Method works in any country. It won't tell you your country's rules; it shows you how to find them.
In the book, that 290 a month turns into 540 extra on a 3,000 camera, and a 480 shortfall in a slow month. It is the kind of choice that comes up when you start out: a job offer with a pay figure and a page of small print, a friend who wants you to sign as guarantor, a message that promises a guaranteed return. You usually have to choose fast.
It is a practical personal finance guide for anyone starting out or starting over, at any age: a first job, a first loan, a first apartment, a fresh start, or a move to a new city or country. It also fits lives that don't match standard advice: freelancers and gig workers with irregular income, people supporting family, and newcomers finding their feet in a new country. The rules change at every border. Your way of deciding shouldn't.
The examples use made-up "units" and invented people, so nothing dates when rates change and the method travels with you when you move. Where a real rate or rule matters, you learn to find it, judge it and keep it in a personal look-up map.
The five questions:
• Purpose: What is this for?
• Cost: What does it really cost?
• Risk: What could go wrong, and how badly?
• Exit: How easily can I get out or get my money back?
• Fit: Does it suit my life?
Exit, the fourth question, asks you to plan your way out before you sign.
Inside, you will learn how to:
• compare job offers and read a payslip by what you actually take home
• plan around a low month, build a payday routine, and size a savings buffer (often called an emergency fund)
• test a loan, credit card or buy now, pay later plan before you sign, and spot scams and risky bets
• find and judge the real rates, fees and rules where you live, and handle money with family, friends and roommates, including guarantees
• settle into a new place with a first-90-days checklist, and turn it all into a plan for your first year
Each chapter opens with a short story, shows the five questions at work on a worked example, and ends with a practical exercise. The back of the book has a decision worksheet, look-up templates, a glossary, a scam checklist you can keep on your phone, and a first-90-days checklist for a new place.
Written by Steven Schoombee, an electrical engineer who had to learn money from scratch while working in several countries. He is not a financial advisor, and this book doesn't pretend to be one. It is a clear way to think, built from the decisions he wishes he had known how to make.
You don't need to know everything about money. You need a better way to decide.
