Zara Delling has made a comfortable living as a fraud. Her psychic shop, The Crystalline Veil, offers elaborately staged séances and cleverly crafted "spiritual guidance" to clients who never suspect the hidden fans creating spirit breezes or the knee-controlled table that produces ghostly knocks. It's all harmless theater-until the night a real spirit crashes her performance.

During a routine séance, Zara is suddenly possessed by the ghost of Amelia Rosette, a singer who disappeared in 1978. Speaking through Zara, Amelia names "Mason Bell" and "murder" before vanishing, leaving Zara shaken and her skeptical best friend Nico as the only witness. When Mason Bell-a prominent spiritual retreat owner-is found dead the next day, Zara realizes she's stumbled into something far beyond her carefully constructed illusions.

As Amelia's spirit returns with increasing strength, Zara experiences visions of the past and develops genuine psychic abilities that terrify and fascinate her. With help from her supernaturally sensitive cat Specter and the reluctantly supportive Nico, Zara investigates Amelia's disappearance, uncovering financial fraud, jealousy, and a decades-long conspiracy involving the town's most respected citizens.

But Detective Moira Lin is watching Zara's every move, convinced she's either a fraud exploiting a tragedy or somehow involved in Mason's death. As Zara gets closer to the truth, she discovers that everyone-from the retreat's calculating co-owner to Amelia's obsessed fan-has secrets worth killing to protect.
