The Janitor

At nineteen, Trent Wilkerson has nothing.

Homeless in the depths of the Great Depression, he sleeps beneath bridges, scrapes together pennies, and dreams of a better life. Then he meets Jazmine-a beautiful, intelligent young woman whose presence awakens something in him he has never known before: the desire to become someone worthy of love.

But desire alone cannot transform a man.

When Trent loses Jazmine to a man he believes is his superior in every way, he turns toward the only escape he can find. He joins the Navy after Pearl Harbor, hoping that war will give him the adventure, purpose, and dignity that poverty has denied him. Returning home, wounded and disillusioned, he finds himself back where he started: working as a janitor, living in a boarding house, and wondering whether an ordinary man can have an extraordinary life.

Then he meets Mrs. Fletcher, an aging widow whose loneliness mirrors his own.

In the quiet companionship of two wounded souls, Trent begins to discover a truth he has spent his entire life running from: perhaps a meaningful life isn't measured by wealth, status, romance, or heroism.

Perhaps it is measured by whom we love-and who is waiting for us when we come home.
