The Invulnerable Armor

Every advanced practitioner has a heel.

It is the one place in the psyche where, despite years of practice, you can still be reliably wounded - the unspoken expectation, the unexamined attachment, the small unprotected spot the armor of mastery does not quite cover. Most teachers do not describe what to do when life finds it. Most teachings stop just short of this work, because this is the work that follows mastery, and most readers never get this far.

THE INVULNERABLE ARMOR is the closing volume of The Orphic Cycle, Frank Onaissi's five-book reading of Greek myth as a map of the inner life. Here, the myth is Achilles - the warrior whose mother dipped him in the river Styx so that he would be invulnerable to weapons. The dipping worked everywhere except where she held him, by the heel. He grew into the most fearsome warrior of the age. And he was killed, in the end, by an arrow guided by the gods to the only mortal place his mother's grip overlooked.
