The House of Atreus

"The House of Atreus" is a celebrated English translation of the "Oresteia", the monumental trilogy of Greek tragedies by the ancient playwright Aeschylus. This powerful work explores the curse that haunts the royal line of Atreus, unfolding across three interconnected plays: "Agamemnon", "The Libation Bearers", and "The Eumenides". The narrative cycle begins with the homecoming of King Agamemnon from the Trojan War and his tragic fate at the hands of his wife, Clytemnestra. The story continues with the return of his son, Orestes, who seeks vengeance for his father's death, and concludes with a divine trial that marks the transition from blood-feuds to civil justice.

E.D.A. Morshead's translation is widely regarded for its ability to preserve the poetic grandeur and rhythmic intensity of the original Greek verse. By addressing profound themes of fate, moral responsibility, and the evolution of legal systems, "The House of Atreus" remains an essential pillar of Western literature. This collection offers readers a direct encounter with the dramatic power and philosophical inquiry of classical Athens, providing a timeless look at the human condition and the struggle for justice.
