The Horrors of Slavery

"The Horrors Of The Negro Slavery Existing In Our West Indian Islands" presents a stark depiction of the realities of slavery in the West Indies during the early 19th century. The anonymous author draws upon official documents recently presented to the House of Commons to provide an unflinching account of the brutal conditions endured by enslaved people. This work serves as a crucial historical record, offering insight into the social and political context of the era and highlighting the urgent need for abolition. It stands as a testament to the suffering inflicted by the system of slavery and a powerful indictment of its inhumanity. The use of official documentation lends weight to the author's claims, making this a valuable resource for understanding the history of slavery and its lasting impact.

The first thing which occurs in these papers particularly deserving of notice is a continuation of the correspondence between Lord Seaforth and the Secretary of State. The following is a transcript of it, with the addition of a few notes intended to illustrate the text:

"Extract of a Letter from Lord Seaforth to the Earl Camden, dated Barbadoes, 13th November 1804.
