history of Herodotus. (Volume I) A new English version, ed. with copious notes and appendices, illustrating the history and geography of Herodotus, fr

Before history was a discipline, it was a journey. In Volume I of The History of Herodotus, that journey begins at the edges of the known world and moves towards the clash of empires. War, wonder, and witness meet. This classical history translation brings Herodotus into vivid English while preserving the cadence and curiosity that made him the father of history for readers of fifth century BC Greece and the wider ancient Mediterranean world. Volume I sets the method: enquiry, comparison, scepticism, delight. You see how geography shapes power, how travel yields testimony, and how rumour hardens into record. It is as pleasurable on a quiet evening as it is rigorous at the desk, too.

Prepared as an annotated edition with notes, it is rich in scholarly commentary and appendices that clarify names, places, customs, and competing chronologies. The editor draws on cuneiform and hieroglyphic discovery to test traditions against inscriptions, making the work invaluable to ancient history researchers and a dependable classics students reference. Across its pages runs the essential greco-persian wars history, but also the broader ancient world ethnography: peoples, religions, economies, and landscapes observed with an unmatched appetite for detail.

Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Set beside Thucydides' Peloponnesian War or Xenophon's Anabasis, Herodotus offers the indispensable starting point: how stories become sources, and how inquiry becomes history.
