Expedition Overseers are considered the heroes of Hevalth, maintaining peace by locating and capturing mystical creatures and criminals. The International Exam guarantees such a title, drawing thousands of applicants every year with its promise of wealth and prestige; strong and weak, royal and commoner. Though the challenges and length of the exam are unknown, one thing remains clear: not all who take the exam live to try again.

Five of this year's aspirants, strangers to one another, each have hidden reasons to brave the perils of the exam. One seeks revenge, another power, and one merely to support his desperate family.
