Professor Nivor Caul has spent thirty-one years cataloguing the tax rolls of dead economies. He trusts ledgers the way other men trust scripture - until the morning one shows a payment received a fortnight before it was due.

What follows is not a mystery to be solved. It is an account to be properly read.

At a university with no founding date, buildings grow extra floors overnight, libraries rearrange their own shelves, and a cathedral appears, fully formed, in the middle of a lake. Nivor's own book has grown chapters he never wrote, in a hand disturbingly like his own. When an underground archivist shows him a wall old enough to have forgotten its own name, Nivor understands: reality is not a place. It is an archive. And it has been quietly, patiently revising itself for longer than any civilization has kept count.

Guided by a cartographer whose maps arrive before the ground does, a woman who ages by geography instead of by calendar, and the growing certainty that he has been chosen - deliberately, for reasons no one will yet explain - Nivor sets out across a country where bridges refuse to be crossed, staircases argue with themselves, and a debt older than history is finally coming due.

At the very bottom of everything waits a single book whose title changes every second, and a truth Nivor is not prepared for: the book is not being read.

It is reading him.

For readers of Piranesi, House of Leaves, and Borges - a work of literary weird fiction about memory, testimony, and what it costs to be properly, honestly seen.
