Old-school, bitter, and carrying prejudices he barely bothers to hide, he sees the victims as participants in a foolish game that should never have existed.

But when a second body is discovered, the outrage erupts across the city. Activists demand answers. The media descends. Pressure mounts inside the department.

And somewhere in Manhattan, a killer is still playing.

As the last surviving player realizes the crown he chased may cost him his life, Detective McFarland faces a decision that will define him forever: cling to his resentment... or remember the oath he swore when he pinned on the badge.
