Each chapter pairs a short, well sourced history with full recipes adapted for a modern kitchen, drawing on surviving texts from Apicius, Cato the Elder, and the Historia Augusta. This is not a book about recreating Rome exactly as it was. It is a book about understanding Rome a little more clearly, one meal at a time, starting from the ground its empire was actually built on.
