Previously published as The Count of Raysa Jenkins by Rachael Gregson
For Raysa Jenkins, currency is measured by the number of breaths she is allowed to take. Civilians are fitted with collars that tighten when their count drops to zero, with certain death awaiting the poor. After being rescued from the circus that her parents sold her to, she now runs with a ragtag team of survivors under the leadership of Kass, an ex-assassin who may or may not be who she says she is.
But then Clout, a wise-cracking aristocratic monopolist, offers an impossible dilemma in lieu of payment: Kass must assist in taking down the four governors who control the breath system. To guarantee a successful return, Raysa is forced to stay behind.
Weeks turn into months, and Raysa questions her faith in both her team and society itself. After Kass goes radio silent, it is up to Raysa to finish what her friends started. But freedom from the collar system comes with a price, and the truth may be the last thing Raysa is prepared for.
