The Council of Nicaea was far more than a meeting of bishops-it was the turning point that reshaped the future of Christianity and, ultimately, the course of Western civilization. In the summer of AD 325, more than three hundred bishops gathered at the invitation of Emperor Constantine to confront a controversy that threatened to divide the Christian world. What began as a dispute over the identity of Christ became the most consequential council in church history.
In this vivid and meticulously researched narrative, Marcus E. Marchand takes readers inside the council chamber to witness the personalities, political maneuvering, theological debates, and imperial ambitions that produced the Nicene Creed-a confession of faith still embraced by billions today. Rather than repeating familiar legends or defending predetermined conclusions, this book carefully separates historical evidence from centuries of myth, revealing what actually happened, who influenced the outcome, and why the decisions made at Nicaea continue to shape Christian belief seventeen centuries later.
Discover the dramatic rise of Christianity from a persecuted movement to an imperial religion, the clash between Arius and his opponents, Constantine's pivotal role, the creation of the Creed, the truth behind enduring misconceptions, and the lasting impact of the council on doctrine, church authority, religious liberty, and the relationship between faith and political power.
Balanced, accessible, and deeply engaging, The Council of Nicaea is written for Christians, historians, students, pastors, and curious readers alike. Whether you are exploring the origins of orthodox Christianity or seeking to understand one of history's most influential gatherings, this compelling account offers a clear, evidence-based journey into the meeting that forever changed the Christian world.
