The Clever Pots

The pots had been everywhere before they had a name.

In a Haalpulaar village in West Africa, the women had carried water in pots for as long as anyone could remember. The pots were heavy. The path to the river was long. The water sloshed and slipped. There had to be a better way - and one curious child finally asked: what does the river do? What does the gourd do? What does the leaf do?

And so begins a small revolution. By watching the way water travels through nature, the children of the village reimagine the pot - lighter, smarter, shaped by what already works in the world around them. The elders smile. The river smiles. The pots get clever.

The Clever Pots is a celebration of biomimicry - the ancient art of learning from nature - set in a Haalpulaar (Fulani) village in West Africa. It honors traditional ecological knowledge as the original STEM, and reminds young readers that the most innovative ideas often live in plain sight, waiting for someone to notice.
