The Bureau of Biological Survey

"The Bureau of Biological Survey; Its History, Activities and Organization" offers an exhaustive administrative and historical account of one of the most pivotal agencies in the development of American wildlife management. This scholarly work traces the evolution of the Bureau from its 19th-century origins as a small division focused on economic ornithology and mammalogy to its critical role as a major federal institution.

The text provides a detailed examination of the Bureau's diverse functions, including its scientific research into the distribution and habits of birds and mammals, its efforts in pest control, and its expanding responsibilities in the enforcement of federal conservation laws such as the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Author Jenks Cameron meticulously outlines the organization's structure, its legislative foundations, and its impact on the broader conservation movement in the United States.

This volume serves as an essential resource for those interested in the history of environmental policy, the development of government bureaucracy, and the early scientific efforts to preserve North American biodiversity. It captures a crucial era when the federal government began to recognize the ecological and economic importance of the nation's natural resources and the scientific necessity of wildlife protection.
