THE BLUE BIRD, by Maurice Maeterlinck, Adapted by Gavin Bantock
Great Dramas for Student Actors, Vol. 6

The charming story, which appeals to all ages, of two children's search for the Blue Bird, the symbol of true happiness.

A simple dream-fantasy packed with profound thoughts. Dog, Cat, Fire, Water, Bread, Candy and Light all assume human shapes and teach us the true meanings of life.

The boy Tyltyl and his sister Mytyl have exciting encounters with an ugly old fairy and a magic diamond; good and evil spirits of the past and future; horrors of darkness and disease; angry trees in the forest; greedy, selfish and lazy pleasure-seekers - and Time himself, sending out the not-yet born Blue Children to begin life on Earth.

Where and what is the Blue Bird? Is it in the Land of Memory, the Palace of Night, in the dark Forest, or in the Palace of Happinesses? Is it in a Graveyard. Or in the Kingdom of the Future? Or is it to be found in the pure-minded joys and warm-hearted attitudes of life at home? Nothing is what it seems. Death turns into life, selfish pleasure turns into pain; and the Blue Bird seems not to be a real bird at all.
