Humanity has learned how to change its state.
Wake me up.
Help me concentrate.
Calm me down.
Help me continue.
Change my perception.
Throughout the day, we repeatedly introduce signals designed to move us away from the state we are already in. Coffee, nicotine, alcohol, THC, sugar, medication, screens and countless forms of stimulation promise activation, focus, relief, endurance or escape.
But do we ever arrive in another state? Or does the next signal enter while the organism is still changing through the previous one?
The Architecture of Addictive Energy follows one question pursued since 2014: What energy can become stronger than conscious intention?
The investigation begins beneath the visible behaviour. The organism is never empty or still. Signals are moving, ions are crossing membranes, molecules are being transformed and energy is being redistributed before anything new is introduced.
Every signal therefore enters movement already in progress.
The first exposure changes the conditions encountered by the second. The second participates in forming the conditions encountered by the third. Slowly, repetition develops an architecture.
This architecture has a name: addictive energy.
Moving across physiology, neurobiology, endocrinology, metabolism, receptors, one-carbon chemistry, methyl transfer, homocysteine and allostatic load, this book investigates how repeated activation can reorganize the human organism.
Humanity has extracted, purified, concentrated and standardized powerful carbon-based molecules-and made their signals continuously available. We have become highly skilled at producing another change of state. Yet we rarely remain long enough to discover what the previous change is still producing.
This book does not ask only why we repeat. It asks what repetition is forming. It invites another awareness: to recognize the state already in motion beneath the urge, and to see that the next signal never meets the same organism as the one before it.
The Architecture of Addictive Energy is Book One of The Addictive Energy Investigation.
Book Two, The Unfinished Present, follows the question further-to the volcanic island of Milos, where the Earth becomes the teacher of activation, transformation, redistribution and return.
Before seeking another state, we may first need to discover whether the present one has ever had the chance to become.
