Can a lawyer defend her license when the accusations arrive without witnesses, dates, or evidence? In this legal thriller, attorney Celeste Duarte has thirty days to answer a grievance that could end her career.
The complaint alleges that Celeste knowingly helped Maggie Fontaine seek restoration of her rights despite believing Maggie lacked capacity. It also accuses her of coaching Maggie's testimony, manipulating her medication, soliciting another person improperly, and using documents obtained improperly. The grievance offers grave conclusions, but leaves basic questions unanswered.
Celeste cannot subpoena witnesses, depose the complainant, or demand the expert's file. Her written response may be the only account the probable-cause panel reads before deciding whether to charge her. She starts marking every omission and gathering the records that show what happened.
Then she and Odessa trace the complaint to the Guardianship Quality Alliance, an organization with no members or office, staffed by a former employee of the guardian's law firm. The connection raises a harder question: who is driving the accusations, and what does the process protect?
At the center is Maggie, the woman whose capacity is being questioned. She has read the public grievance and knows what it says about her. Celeste is both its target and the lawyer trying to make sure Maggie is heard. As the deadline closes in, defending her own work means answering for a system in which the person most affected may not get a say.
A record can name a person, describe her, and still leave her voice out.
