Spring Within Winter

저는 '13개의 도시락 (제1권)'을 저의 첫 수필집으로 낸 이래, 겨울에 '겨울바다 이야기 (제2권)'를 내고 2011년 봄에 '버지니아의 봄 (제3권)' 그리고 여름에 '버지니아의 여름 (제4권)', 가을에 '셰넌도어 계곡의 메아리 (제5권)"라는 수필집을 차례로 계절에 맞추어 내 보았습니다. 이후 저는 분주한 일상 속에서 '이제는 조금 쉬어야 되겠다'하고 생각했지만, 이번 겨울에 저는 또다시 틈틈이 시간이 날 때마다 생각나는 무언가를 혼자서 써오게 되었습니다. 내 "생각의 분신 (分身)들"이라고 할 수 있는50개의 부끄러운 글들을 여기 모아 저의 여섯번째 수필집을 내면서 저는 '내 생각의 틀'을 벽돌을 만들어 내듯이 하나씩 정성스레 찍어내는 마음으로 글을 썼습니다.
'겨울 속의 봄'은 크게3개의 큰 묶음으로 되어 있으며, 저는 각 글묶음의 제목들을 '단상 (斷想),' '한국 (韓國)의 추억,' 그리고 '미국 (美國)에서의 삶'으로 정하였습니다. '단상 (斷想)'은 여러가지 다양한 주제들에 대한 저의 평소 생각을 그대로 솔직하게 적어 내려간 것입니다. '한국 (韓國)의 추억'은 한국에서 제가 생활하면서 보고 느꼈던 것들 중 아직도 선명하게 기억에 남는 것들을 잊어버리지 않고자 쓴 글들이며, 마지막으로 '미국 (美國)에서의 삶'은 이방인 (異邦人)으로서 제가 지금까지 좌충우돌 (左衝右突) 하면서 몸으로 겪은 것들과 관련된 이야기들 중에서 아직도 기억에 남아있거나 미국에 거주하는 한 외국인 (外國人)으로서 보았을 때 매우 흥미 (興味)로웠던 일들을 쓴 것입니다.

I published 13 Lunchboxes (Volume 1) as my first essay collection. Following that, I released Winter Sea Stories (Volume 2) in the winter, Spring in Virginia (Volume 3) in the spring of 2011, Summer in Virginia (Volume 4) in the summer, and finally, Echoes of Shenandoah Valley (Volume 5) in the fall, aligning each collection with the corresponding season.
Afterwards, amid the busyness of daily life, I thought to myself, "It's time to take a break." However, this winter, I found myself once again writing down thoughts that came to mind whenever I could find the time. Now, as I present my sixth essay collection, containing fifty pieces I call the "projections of my thoughts," I reflect on the process of carefully crafting each essay as if molding bricks to build a solid framework for my ideas.
Spring Within Winter is composed of three major sections, each with its own theme: "Reflections," "Memories of Korea," and "Life in America."

• "Reflections" contains my honest thoughts on a variety of topics that have occupied my mind.
• "Memories of Korea" includes writings that capture vivid recollections of my experiences in Korea, written to preserve moments that remain clear in my memory.
• Lastly, "Life in America" shares stories of my life as a foreigner, recounting the struggles and memorable experiences I've had as an immigrant in the United States, and the events that struck me as particularly fascinating from the perspective of an outsider.
