Soul of a Dog

A Story of Loyalty, Loss, Leadership, and Rebuilding After the Uniform

What happens when the uniform comes off...

and the mission disappears?

Soul of a Dog is a raw, unfiltered memoir of a U.S. Army infantry NCO who rose fast, led from the front, earned Highly Qualified and Most Qualified evaluations-and then lost everything that gave him identity.

From a rough childhood in Georgia...

To juvenile detention...

To thriving in military school...

To leading soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division...

To losing his closest friend to suicide...

To nearly taking his own life...

This is not a polished war story.

It's the truth.

Malaki Smart writes openly about:

• The silent weight many veterans carry after service
• The identity crisis no one prepares you for
• Grief, guilt, and survivor's remorse
• Marriage under pressure
• Mental health, therapy, and medication stigma
• Financial mistakes and rebuilding discipline
• Entrepreneurship after transition
• Fatherhood and breaking generational cycles

At the heart of it all is a simple idea:

Dogs don't choose their owners - but they love without condition.

Through the memory of a childhood dog, the loss of a brother-in-arms, and the creation of Eddy's K9 Retreat, this story becomes about something deeper than business or rank.

It becomes about rebuilding a soul.

This book is for:

• Veterans struggling after transition
• Leaders who feel lost without a title
• Men battling depression in silence
• Fathers who want to break generational cycles
• Anyone trying to rebuild after rock bottom

If you've ever:

• Questioned your identity after success
• Felt forgotten once the mission ended
• Lost a brother to suicide
• Wondered who you are without the uniform

You are not alone.

This isn't a motivational speech.

It's proof that you can hit rock bottom...

and still get back up.

The fight doesn't end when the war does.

But neither does your purpose.
