What if the record is accurate about the action-and wrong about the person?

Before Ryan Burbank had language for masking, classification, institutional memory, or the invisible pressures that shape human behavior, there was Charlie: a marionette on her grandparents' shelf.

His strings were visible.

Someone pulled. Charlie moved. Nobody looked at the movement and mistook it for personality.

SORRY, CHARLIE: A Genealogy of Decontextualized Judgment asks what happens when human beings are not afforded the same context.

A child goes still because a room is overwhelming; the adults record maturity. A worker anticipates every failure because uncertainty is costly; the employer records reliability. A person signs after meaningful alternatives disappear; the institution records consent.

The action may be real. The interpretation may still be incomplete.

Braiding literary memoir, cultural criticism, documentary reconstruction, and systems analysis, Ryan Burbank follows the distance between what happened, what was recorded, and what the surviving record is later allowed to mean.

Moving from family, Catholic school, neurodivergent masking, gender, relationships, motherhood, and work into bureaucracy, institutional records, classification, data aggregation, technology, and AI, SORRY, CHARLIE examines what happens when pressure produces adaptation, the adaptation enters the record, and the pressure disappears.

This is not an argument that context excuses behavior. Context is not absolution. It is an argument for judgment proportional to what the evidence can actually support-and for preserving enough uncertainty, contradiction, and humanity that a record never becomes more authoritative than the person it describes.

Its recurring question is deceptively simple:

What did refusal cost?
