Shattered Profiles

The book explores themes of identity, betrayal, the impact of social media and technology on mental health, and the struggle for authenticity in a performative world (pp. 5, 8, 28).

• The World: The students at Westbrook High (later Westlake High) live in an "augmented schoolyard" where a pervasive AR system, called the "profile," assigns social currency and status through visual cues like glowing badges, emoji wings, and color-coded alerts (pp. 5-6, 16). This system creates intense pressure for performance and validation (pp. 8, 11).
• The Inciting Incident: Kaia, a popular student with a vibrant, fiery profile, suddenly finds her digital identity compromised. Her profile glitches and displays false accusations of cybercrime and slurs, instantly turning her into an outcast (pp. 16-17).
• The Conflict: The betrayal is intensified by the public nature of the AR system, which magnifies every slight and shunning (pp. 18-19). Kaia struggles with isolation, anxiety, and depression as her friends abandon her and the digital world becomes a hostile environment (pp. 29-30). She suspects an architect is behind the chaos, possibly a rival known as Vesper (p. 37).
• The Resolution (Unfolding): Kaia starts investigating the hack herself, using her coding skills to trace the digital breadcrumbs left in the system's cracks (pp. 36, 39). She finds an unexpected ally in Luca Wade, a quiet coder who sees beyond the masks and guides her through the virtual labyrinths to uncover the source code of the attack (pp. 33, 42). The story builds toward Kaia's fight to unmask the truth and reclaim her identity from the manipulation (pp. 25, 39).
