Labrador Sam was one of an increasing number of Search Dogs working with Mountain Rescue Teams in the wild places of Britain, going out with their handlers in all weathers, at any time of the day or night, to search for people lost or injured. A member of the Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA), Sam was trained to find people using air scent; he could cover large areas very quickly when speed could be crucial.
Sam's story was written to give a true picture of the life of a SARDA dog and his handler, intended to represent the work of Search Dogs: years of arduous training, constant reassessments, difficult and dangerous operations in which both willingly risk their lives.
Actual search and rescue operations described, although inspired by real cases, have been fictionalised. However, they vividly portray the work which Search Dogs like Sam undertake often several times a week.
