Saints in Sussex

"Saints in Sussex: Poems and Plays" is an evocative collection that intertwines the spiritual and the pastoral, capturing the unique atmosphere of the English countryside. Written by the acclaimed novelist and poet Sheila Kaye-Smith, this work explores the lives and legends of saints through the lens of the Sussex landscape. The volume is structured to bridge the gap between devotion and the physical world, offering readers a meditative journey through both verse and drama.

The collection is divided into two distinct parts. The poetry section features lyrical meditations on various saints, reimagining their spiritual legacies within the familiar fields, downs, and shores of southern England. Following the poems are two short plays, "The Child Born at the Plough" and "The Shepherd of Liddington," which blend religious narrative with the rhythms of rural life. These dramatic pieces present sacred stories in a localized setting, emphasizing the presence of the divine within the everyday.

Kaye-Smith's writing is celebrated for its vivid imagery and its deep sense of place. "Saints in Sussex: Poems and Plays" serves as a testament to her profound connection to her home county and her ability to craft literature that resonates with historical depth and spiritual sincerity. It remains a significant work for those interested in regional English literature and the intersection of faith and the natural world.
